May and might 2

We use may and might to talk about possible actions or happenings in the future.

우리는 may와 might를 미래의 어떤 상황이나 행동이 가능함을 말할때 사용.

• I haven't decided yet where to go on holiday.
  나는 휴가를 어디로 갈지 아직 정하지 못했어.
  I may go to Ireland. (= perhaps I will go there)
  나는 아일랜드로 갈거같아.
• Take an umbrella with you. It might rain later. (= perhaps it will rain)
  우산 챙겨가. 이후에 비가 올거 같아.
• The bus isn't always on time.
  그 버스는 항상 정시에 없어.
  We might have to wait a few minutes. (= perhaps we will have to wait)
  우리는 몇분 기다려야 할것 같아.

The negative forms are may not and might not (might't)

• Amy may not go out tonight. She isn't feeling well.
  (= perhaps she will not go out)
  아미는 오늘 나갈것 같지 않아. 그녀는 기분이 썩 좋지않아.
• There might not be enough time to discuss everything at the meeting.
  (= perhaps there will not be enough time)
  그 미팅에서 모든것을 논의할 충분한 시간이 없는것 같아.

• I'll be late this evening. (for sure)
  나는 이번저녁에 늦을거야.
• I may / might be late this evening. (possible)
  나는 이번저녁에 늦을것 같아.

Usually you can use may or might. So you can say.

예문) 해석참고용

• I may go to Ireland. or I might go to Ireland.
  나는 아일랜드로 갈것같아.
• Jane might be able to help you. or Jane may be able to help you.
  제인은 아마도 너를 도와줄 수 있을것 같아.

But we use only might (not may) when the situation is not real.

하지만 우리는 그 상황이 진짜가 아닐때 might를 사용한다.

• If they paid me better, I might work harder. (not I may work)
  만약 그들이 나에게 더 지불했다면, 나는 더 열심히 일했을거야.

The situation here is not real because they do not pay me well, 

so I'm not going to work harder.
이 상황은 진짜가 아니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 나에게 잘 보상하지 않았기 때문이다,

그래서 나는 더 열심히 일하지 않을것이다.

There is a continuous form: may / might be -ing.

• Don't phone at 8.30. I'll be watching the football on television.
• 8.30에는 전화하지마. 나는 풋볼중계를 티비로 볼거야.
• Don't phone at 8.30. I might be watching (or I may be watching) the football on TV.
• (= perhaps I'll be watching it.)
• 8.30에는 전화하지마. 나는 풋볼중계를 티비로 볼것같아.

We also use may / might be -ing for possible plans.

• I'm going to Ireland in July. (for sure)
  나는 아일랜드에 7월에 갈거야.
• I might be going (or I may be going) to Ireland soon. (possible)
  나는 아일랜드에 곧 갈거 같아.

But you can also say I might go / I may go with little difference in meaning.

하지만 I may go 와 I might go는 조금 의미상 다르다.

Might as well

Helen and Clare have just missed the bus. The buses run every hour.

헬렌과 클래어는 그 버스를 막 놓쳤다. 그 버스는 매시간마다 운행한다.

We might as well do something =
We should do it because there is no better alternative.

There is no reason not to do it.

우리는 그것을 하는게 좋다 왜냐면 다른 대안이 없기 때문이다.

그것을 안할 이유가 없다.

May as well is also possible.

예문) 해석참고용

• A: What time are you going out?
  A: 너는 몇시에 나갈거야?
  B: Well, I'm ready, so I might as well go now.
• B: 음, 나는 준비됬어, 그래서 지금 나갈거 같아.
• Buses are so expensive these days, you might as well get a taxi.
  (= taxis are as good, no more expensive)
  버스는 현재 매우 비싸, 너는 택시를 이용하는게 낫겠다.
