Used to (do)

• Nicola doesn't travel much these days.
  니콜라는 요즘 여행을 잘 안다닌다.
• She prefers to stay at home.
  그녀는 집에 있기를 좋아한다.
• But she used to travel a lot.
  그러나 그녀는 여행을 많이 다니곤 했다.
• She used to go away two or three times a year.
  그녀는 년에 2~3회는 나갔다 왔다.
• She used to travel a lot
  그녀는 여행을 많이 다니곤 했다 
• = she travelled a lot often in the past, but she doesn't do this any more.
  = 그녀는 과거에 여행을 많이 했다. 그러나 지금은 더이상 아니다.

Something used to happen =  it happened often in the past, but no longer happens.

used to = 과거에는 빈번했으나, 지금은 더이상 일어나지 않는다.

예문) 해석참고용

• I used to play tennis a lot, but I don't play very much now.
  나는 테니스를 많이 하곤 했는데, 지금은 많이 하지 않는다.
• David used to spend a lot of money on clothes. These days he can't afford it.
  데이비드는 옷에 많은 돈을 써왔으나, 요즘은 그럴 형편이 아니다.
• Do you go to the cinema much? Not now, but I used to. (=I used to go)
  영화 많이 보니? 지금은 아냐 전에는 그랬다.

We also use used to ... for things that were true, but are not true any more.

우리가 used to를 , 어떤것이 진실이었으나 더이상 아닐때도 사용.

• This building is now a furniture shop. It used to be a cinema.
  이 빌딩은 지금 가구점이다. 그건 영화관 이었다.
• I used to think Mark was unfriendly, but now I realize he's a very nice person.
  나는 마크가 사교적이지 않다고 생각했는데, 지금에야 그가 아주 좋은 사람이란걸 알았다.
• I've started drinking tea recently. I never used to like it before.
  나는 최근에 차를 마시기 시작했다. 나느 전에 이걸 전혀 좋아하지 않았다.
• Lisa used to have very long hair when she was a child.
  리사는 어렸을때, 긴 머리를 가졌었다.

"I used to do something" is past. There is no present. You can't say "I use to do".

I used to do something 은 과거이다. 현재형이 아니다. 따라서 I use to do는 사용불가.

To talk about the present, use the present simple (I do)
현재에 대하여 말할때 present simple을 사용한다.

The normal question form is did (you) use to ... ?

• Did you use to eat a lot of sweets when you were a child?
  당신이 어렸을때 단것을 많이 먹곤 했나요?

The negative form is didn't use to ... (used not to ... is also possible)

• I didn't use to like him. (or I used not to like him)
  나는 그를 안 좋아하곤(싫어하곤) 했다. (지금은 좋다는 의미)

Compare I used to do and I was doing.

• I used to watch TV a lot.
  나는 TV를 많이 보곤 했다.
  (= I watched TV often in the past, but I no longer do this.)
  (= 나는 과거에 TV를 자주봤으나 지금은 아니다.)
• I was watching TV when Rob called. (= I was in the middle of watching TV.)
  롭이 전화했을때 TV를 보는 중이었다.

Do not confuse I used to do and I am used to doing.
The structures and meanings are different.

  나는 혼자 살곤 했다.
  (= I lived alone in the past, but I no longer live alone.)
  (= 나는 과거에 혼자살았다, 그러나 더이상 혼자 살지 않는다.)
• I am used to living alone.
  나는 혼자사는게 익숙하다.
  (= I live alone, and I don't find it strange or difficult
  (= 나는 혼자살고 이게 이상하거나 어렵다고 생각하지 않았다.
  because I've been living alone for some time)
  왜냐하면 혼자산지 오래되었다.)
