Past perfect (I had done)

• Sarah went to a party last week.
  사라는 지난 주 모임에 갔다.
• Paul went to the party too, but they didn't see each other.
  파울도 그 모임에 갔다, 그러나 서로 보지 못했다.
• Paul left the party at 10.30 and Sarah arrived at 11 o'clock.
  파울은 10.30에 모임을 떠났고 사라는 11에 도착했다.
• When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul wasn't there.
  사라가 그 모임에 도착했을때, 파울은 거기에 없었다.
• He had gone home.
  그는 집에 갔다.

Had gone is the past perfect.

Sometimes we talk about something that happened in the past.
과거에 일어난 일에 대하여 말할때 사용.

• Sarah arrived at the party.
  사라는 파티에 도착했다.

This is the starting point of the story.
이건 이야기의 시작이다.

Then, if we want to talk about things that happened before this time,
그 후에 만약 우리가 이 시간보다 더 과거에 대하여 말하고 싶다면

we use the past perfect.
past perfect를 사용.

• When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home.
  사라가 파티에 도착했을때, 파울은 이미 집에 갔다.

• When we got home last night, we found that somebody had broken into the flat.
  우리가 지난밤 집에 도착했을때, 우리는 누군가 이 아파트에 침입한 흔적을 발견했다.
• Karen didn't want to go to the cinema with us
  카렌은 우리와 함께 영화관에 가고싶지 않았다
  because she'd already seen the movie.
  왜냐하면 그녀는 이미 그 영화를 봤다.
• At first I thought I'd done the right thing,
  처음에 나는 옳은 일을 했다고 생각했지만,
  but I soon realized that I'd made a big mistake.
  곧 내가 큰 실수를 한 것을 깨달았다.
• The man sitting next to me on the plane was very nervous. He hadn't flown before.

Past perfect
과거의 행위에 대한 결과에 중점.

• Kate had just got home when I phoned.
