For and since
When ... ? and How long ... ?

We use for and since to say how long something has been happening.
어떤 일이 얼마나 오랫동안 일어났는지 말할때 사용.

For + 기간

예문) 해석참고용

• Sally has been working here for six months. (not since six months)
  샐리는 6개월 동안 일하는 중이다.
• I haven't seen Tom for three days.
  나는 톰을 3일동안 못봤다.

Since + 시작 시점

예문) 해석참고용

• Sally has been working here since April. (= from April until now)
  샐리는 4월부터 일하는 중이다.
• I haven't seen Tom since Monday.
  나는 월요일부터 톰을 못봤다.

It is possible to leave out for (but not usually in negative sentences)
평서문에서는 for생략가능 (부정문에서는 반드시 사용)

예문) 해석참고용

• They've been married (for) ten years. (with or without for)
  그들은 10년동안 결혼하고 있다.
• They haven't had a holiday for ten years. (you must use for)
  그들은 10년동안 휴가를 갖지 못했다.

We do not use for + all ... (all day / all my life etc)
all 과 for은 함께 사용이 불가.

예문) 해석참고용

• I've lived here all my life. (not for all my life)
  나는 여기에서 생애를 보내고 있다.

You can use in instead of for in negative sentences (I haven't ... etc)
부정문일때는 for 대신 in을 사용가능.

예문) 해석참고용

• They haven't had a holiday in ten years. (= for ten years)
  그들은 10년동안 휴가를 갖지 못했다.

Compare

when ... ? (+ past simple) and how long ...? (+ present perfect)
When + 단순과거는 말하는 시점을 정확히 안다.
How long + 현재완료는 시점이 명확하지 않다.

기타용법

예문) 해석참고용

• It's two years since I last saw Joe. or It's been two years since ...
  내가 조를 마지막으로 본 날부터 2년이다.
  (= I haven't seen Joe for two years)
• It's ages since we went to the cinema. or It's been ages since ...
  우리가 그 영화를 보러간게 몇년이다.
  (= We haven't been to the cinema for ages)
• How long is it since Mrs Hill died? or How long has it been since ...?
  힐 여사가 죽은 게 얼마나 되었나?
  (= When did Mrs Hill die?)
