How long have you (been) ...?

We use the present perfect to talk about something
that began in the past and still continues now.
어느 과거의 시작부터 현재까지 계속하여 이어지는 것에 대하여 말할때
present perfect를 사용.

문장이 표현하는 내용이 사실관계나 경험에 가깝다면 현재완료쪽으로
행위에 가까우면 현재 진행형으로

• Paul is in hospital. ->
  파울은 병원에 있다.
• He's been in hospital since Monday. (not Paul is in hospital since Monday)
  그는 월요일부터 병원에 있다.
• Do you know each other well? ->
  서로 잘 아는가?
• Have you known each other for a long time? (not Do you know)
  오랬동안 서로를 잘 알게 되었는가?
• She is waiting for somebody. ->
  그녀는 누군가를 기다리는 중이다.
• She's been waiting all morning.
  매일아침 그녀는 기다린다.
• Do they have a car? ->
  그들에게 차가 있나요?
• How long have they had their car?
  얼나마 그들이 차를 가지고 있었나요?

When we ask or say 'how long' the continuous is more usual.
how long을 사용할때는 continuous를 좀더 사용한다.

예제) 해석참고용

• I've been learning English for six months.
  나는 영어를 배운지 6개월이 되었다.
• It's been raining since lunchtime.
  비가 점심시간부터 오고있다.
• Richard has been doing the same job for 20 years.
  리처드는 20년동안 같은 일을 하고있다.
• How long have you been driving? Since I was 17.
  얼마나 오래 운전을 해왔나요? 17살 부터요.

You can use either the present perfect continuous or simple with live and work.
live와 work에 대하여는 둘다 사용가능.

예제) 해석참고용

• Julia has been living / has lived here for a long time.
  줄리아는 오랬동안 여기에 살고있다.
• How long have you been working / have you worked here?
  여기서 얼마나 오랬동안 일해왔나요?

But use the simple (I've lived / I've done etc) with always.
always는 continuous에 사용 불가.

예제) 해석참고용

• I've always lived in the country. (not always been living)
  나는 이 나라에 항상 살고있다.

We say I haven't done something since / for .... (present perfect simple)

예제) 해석참고용

• I haven't seen Tom since Monday. (= Monday was the last time I saw him)
  나는 톰을 월요일부터 보지 않았다. (월요일날 그를 본것이 마지막이다)
• Sarah hasn't phoned for ages. (= the last time she phoned was ages ago)
  사라는 몇년동안 연락이 없다. (그녀가 전화한게 몇년 전이다.)
