Past continuous (I was doing)

I was doing something = I was in the middle of doing something at a certain time.
내가 무언가를 하는 중이었다. = 그 시점에서 내가 하는 중이라는 의미.
The action or situation had already started before this time, but had not finished.
그 시간전에 이미 행동이나 상황이 시작되었으나 끝나지 않은 경우이다.

예문) 해석참고용

• This time last year I was living in Brazil.
  작년 이맘쯤 나는 브라질에서 살았어.
• What were you doing at 10 o'clock last night?
  지난밤 10시에는 뭘했니?
• I waved to Helen, but she wasn't looking.
  헬렌에게 손을 흔들었지만 그녀는 보지 않았어.

Compare
continuous가 있는 문장은 벌어지고 있는 행위나 사건을 중요하게 여긴다.
반면 simple은 사실 관계를 중요하게 여긴다.

Past continuous (in the middle of an action)

예문) 해석참고용

• I was walking home when I met Dan. (in the middle of walking home)
  집에가던 중 댄을 만났어. (집에가는 중)
• Kate was watching TV when we arrived.
  우리가 도착했을땐, 케이트는 TV를 보는 중이었어.

Past simple (complete action)

예문) 해석참고용

• I walked home after the party last night. (= all the way, completely)
  지난밤 그 모임후 나는 집에 갔다. (모든게 끝난)
• Kate watched television a lot when she was ill last year.
  작년 그녀가 앓고있을때, TV를 많이 봤다.

We often use the past simple and the past continuous together to say that
something happened in the middle of something else.
past simple과 past continuous를 함께 사용하면,
어떤 일이 벌어지고 있는 중에 다른 일이 벌어질 때 사용한다.

예문) 해석참고용

• Matt phoned while we were having dinner.
  우리가 저녁을 먹고있을때 매트가 전화했다.
• It was raining when I got up.
  내가 일어났을때 비가 오는 중이었다.
• I saw you in the park yesterday. You were sitting on the grass and reading a book.
  내가 너를 어제 공원에서 봤다. 너는 잔디에 앉아 책을 읽고있었다.
• I hurt my back while I was working in the garden.
  내가 정원에서 일하던 중에 허리를 다쳤다.

But we use the past simple to say that one thing happened after another.
past simple은 다른 어떤 일이 일어난 후에 사용한다.

• When Karen arrived, we were having dinner.
  카렌이 도착했을때, 우리는 저녁을 먹는 중이었다.
• (= we had already started before she arrived)
  그녀가 도착하기 전에 이미 시작하였다.

Past simple (complete action)

예문) 해석참고용

• When Karen arrived, we had dinner.
  카렌이 도착했을때, 우리는 저녁을 먹었다.
• (= Karen arrived, and then we had dinner)
  그녀가 도착하고 나서 우리는 저녁을 먹었다.

Some verbs (know, want, etc) are not normally used in the continuous.

예문) 해석참고용

• We were good friends. We knew each other well. (not We were knowing)
  우리는 좋은 친구들었다. 우리는 서로를 잘 알았다.
• I was enjoying the party, but Chris wanted to go home. (not was wanting)
  나는 그 모임이 즐거웠다. 그러나 크리스는 집에가길 원했다.
